മുമ്പിലുണ്ടായിരുന്ന ഒരു ചെറിയ വാനിൽനിന്നും മണലു പോലുള്ള എന്തോ കാറ്റിൽ പറന്നെത്തി എന്റെ കാറിന്റെ ചില്ലിൽ പതിച്ചു. അപ്പോൾ അസ്വഭാവികത ഒന്നും തോന്നിയില്ല, ആ വാനിനെ ഞാൻ അനായാസം ഓവർ ടേക് ചെയ്ത് ഓടിച്ചു പോയി.

തമിഴ് നാട്ടിൽ രാത്രി സഞ്ചാരികൾ സൂക്ഷിക്കുക Night travelers in Tamil Nadu beware (later part in English) , എന്റെ അനുഭവം പങ്കുവെക്കുന്നു - ഞാൻ ഇന്ത്യ മുഴുവനും രാത്രിയോ പകലോ എന്നു നോക്കാതെ സ്വയം വണ്ടിയോടിച്ചു പോയിട്ടുള്ള ആളാണ്.
കാശ്മീരിലോ നാഗാലാൻഡിലോ അരുണാചൽ പ്രാദേശിലോ ഒരിക്കലും ഉണ്ടാകാത്ത ഒരു അനുഭവം ഈയടുത്ത വേളാങ്കണ്ണി യാത്രയിൽ ഉണ്ടായി. സ്വയം കാറോടിച്ചു പോവുകയായിരുന്നു, ഏകദേശം രാത്രി പത്തര ക്കുശേഷം തഞ്ചാവൂരിൽ ചായ കുടിക്കുവാൻ വണ്ടി നിർത്തി. ഇനി ബാക്കി ഏകദേശം ദൂരം 90 കി. മി. മാത്രം അതുകൊണ്ട് പാതിരക്കു മുൻപ് വേളാങ്കണ്ണിയിൽ എത്തി ഏതെങ്കിലും ഹോട്ടലിൽ കിടന്നുറങ്ങാം എന്നുവിചാരിച്ചു . ചായകുടിച്ചതിനു ശേഷം പിന്നീടുള്ള യാത്രയിൽ ഞാൻ സാധാരണ സ്പീഡിൽ എത്തുന്നതിനു മുൻപേ (വേറെ വണ്ടികളൊന്നും എന്നെ ഓവർ ടേക്ചെയ്യാറില്ല), മുൻപിൽ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്ന ഒരു ചെറിയ വാനിൽനിന്നും മണലു പോലുള്ള എന്തോ കാറ്റിൽ പറന്നെത്തി എന്റെ കാറിന്റെ ചില്ലിൽ പതിച്ചു. അപ്പോൾ അസ്വഭാവികത ഒന്നും തോന്നിയില്ല, ആ വാനിനെ ഞാൻ അനായാസം ഓവർ ടേക് ചെയ്ത് ഓടിച്ചു പോയി.
കുറെ ദൂരം ചെന്നപ്പോൾ വണ്ടിയുടെ ചില്ലിലൂടെ മുൻപോട്ടു കാഴ്ച കുറഞ്ഞു വന്നു. ആദ്യം എ. സി. ഞാൻ മുൻപിലെ ചില്ലിലേക്കു തിരിച്ചു വെച്ചു. പക്ഷെ മിസ്റ്റിങ് കൂടി ക്കൂടി വന്നു, മുൻപിൽ നിന്നും ഒരു വണ്ടി വന്നപ്പോൾ ഒന്നും കാണാൻ മേലാത്ത അവസ്ഥ, അപ്പോൾ വൈപ്പർ ഓപ്പറേറ്റ് ചെയ്തു. വെള്ളം വീണപ്പോൾ ചില്ലു തീർത്തും സുതാര്യമല്ലാതായി. ഞാൻ വണ്ടി സൈഡിൽ നിർത്തി മുൻ സീറ്റിൽ ഉറങ്ങി കൊണ്ടിരുന്ന സുഹ്രത്തിനെ ഇറക്കി ഗ്ലാസ്സു തുടക്കുവാൻ വിട്ടു. തീർത്തും വിജനമായ സ്ഥലം ആയതു കൊണ്ട് വളരെ പെട്ടന്ന് ചില്ലു തുടച്ചു ഞങ്ങൾ വീണ്ടും യാത്ര തുടങ്ങി. പക്ഷെ പെട്ടന്ന് വീണ്ടും ചില്ലിൽ മഞ്ഞു വെള്ളം പിടിച്ചു മങ്ങി. അപ്പോൾ തോന്നി സംഗതി പന്തിയല്ല എന്ന്. ആ വാനിൽ നിന്നും എന്തോ കെമിക്കൽ ഇട്ടതാണ് എന്നു മനസിലായി.
അങ്ങനെ ആണെങ്കിൽ അവരുടെ ആൾക്കാർ വഴിയിൽ എവിടെയോ കാത്തിരിപ്പുണ്ട്, അല്ലെങ്കിൽ അവർ ഉടനെ പുറകെ എത്തും. പക്ഷെ വീണ്ടും ചില്ലു തുടക്കാതിരിക്കുവാനും പറ്റില്ല, അങ്ങനെ വണ്ടി വീണ്ടും നിർത്തി ചില്ലു തുടച്ചു. ആരെങ്കിലും ആക്രമിക്കുവാൻ വന്നാൽ അവർ ഒട്ടും പ്രതീക്ഷിക്കാത്ത ഒരു മറുപടി കൊടുക്കുവാൻ മനസുകൊണ്ട് ഒരുങ്ങിയിരുന്നു. എന്നാലും പിന്നീടുള്ള യാത്ര അതീവ ദുരിതമായിരുന്നു. ഒരു പത്തു പ്രാവശ്യമെങ്കിലും ചില്ലു തുടക്കേണ്ടി വന്നു. സഹയാത്രികൻ നീളമുള്ള കയ്കൊണ്ടു വണ്ടിയിൽ ഇരുന്നു ഓടിച്ചു കൊണ്ട് തന്നെ ചില്ലു തുടക്കുവാൻ പഠിച്ചു. അവസാനം ഞങ്ങൾ വേളാങ്കണ്ണിയിൽ എത്തിയത് വെളുപ്പിനെ മൂന്നു മണിക്ക്.
യാത്രയുടെ അവസാനം വിശദമായി നിർത്തി പരിശോധിച്ചപ്പോൾ വണ്ടിയുടെ മുകളിലും ബോണറ്റിലും എല്ലാം നെറയെ വെള്ളം പിടിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു, ഒരു വെളുത്ത പൊടിപോലുള്ള അവശിഷ്ടവും കണ്ടു. എന്തു കെമിക്കൽ ആണെങ്കിലും സംഗതി വളരെ ഫലവത്താണ്. എന്റെ സ്പീഡും, ഉടനെ വൈപ്പർ ഉപയോഗിക്കാതിരുന്നതും, പിന്നെ വേളാങ്കണ്ണി മാതാവിന്റെ അനുഗ്രഹവും കൊണ്ടായിരിക്കും ആ ഹൈവേ കൊള്ളക്കാരിൽ നിന്നും രക്ഷപെട്ടത്. പോലീസിൽ പരാതി കൊടുത്തില്ല.

Have driven extensively in Kashmir and north-eastern states during night but never had such an experience. Few days back I was driving to Velankanni, a coastal town in Tamil Nadu from Kerala. Reached the Thanjavoor around 10.30 in the night and stopped there for a tea. The remaining distance is about 90 km and was hoping to check in before midnight in some hotel. I was on the driving seat and before I reached cruising speed (normally nobody overtakes me) something thrown out from the van in front had fallen on my wind shield. It sounded a little softer than sand. I then ignored it, over taken the van in a flash and continued.
After some time I noticed that, the wind shield was getting misted and forward visibility was reducing. I directed the ac to the wind shield to clear the misting. It gradually became worse. I was forced to look through gaps in the heavily misted opaque area and was somehow carried on. But when I vehicle came from the front I just could not make out the road and had to look out through the side glass to avoid banging him. So I operated the wiper with water spray to clear the glass. On which the entire wind shield turned opaque. I immediately stopped the car and sent out my friend who was sleeping on the front seat to wipe the wind screen. The place was totally deserted so he did a quick job and we continued.
Within minutes, the misting reappeared, I again tried water spray from the wiper tank and very quickly realised water is only increasing the problem. I soon connected the problem with the mysterious dropping from the van some time back. It’s almost certain that they must be quickly gaining on us or directing their partners waiting on the way. We did some mental preparation to give the robbers a befitting response as and when the encounter happens. Thereafter the stoppings were only on lighted stretch of the road.
We had to stop nearly one dozen times till final destination. In the process my friend learned to simultaneously drive and wipe the wind screen with his long hands. We somehow managed to reach Velankanni by around 3 AM. On closure inspection some white coloured substance was found on the wind shield, bonnet and top of the car which was absorbing the moisture from the air to make the wind shield opaque. My driving speed, delay in using wiper and the blessing of the Velankanni Matha probably have saved us that day. Not made a police complaint. Please avoid night driving on the stretch and share the post.
