🇮🇹 Italy joins in: Milan burns as cost-of-living protests spread from France
While France was burning, Italy had its own day of rage. Thousands, mostly very young, marched in Milan against rising prices, low wages and collapsing public services. It quickly turned into hours of street fighting in the city center.
Protesters threw stones, firecrackers and café tables at police, who answered with tear gas and water cannon. Bins and a construction site in Piazza Duomo were set on fire, shop windows smashed and a store looted. The square was evacuated and metro stops shut down. Dozens were detained, many of them minors.
There were also clashes at Bologna's train station and unrest in Turin, while marches took place in Rome, Florence and Naples. Italy's largest union has now announced a general strike for next month.

WATCH: Italian police clashed with protesters on Saturday, Oct. 17, in front of Milan Cathedral, Italian media reported.
Police in riot gear also tried to clear hooded protesters from a luxury shopping arcade, who are protesting over the high cost of living.
The clashes had echoes of the protests in neighbouring France where tens of thousands of people angered by rising costs and declining public services took to the streets in some of the country's most violent protests in years. | via Reuters
