I would like to offer my heartfelt condolences to the family of Mr. PK Banerjee as well as to the entire Indian football fraternity.
He was a pioneer in every sense of the word, and his achievements will forever have a place in Indian footballing history. Rest in peace.

ദീര്‍ഘനാളായി കൊല്‍ക്കത്തയിലെ സൂപ്പര്‍ സ്പെഷാലിറ്റി ആശുപത്രിയില്‍ ചികിത്സയിലായിരുന്നു പി കെ ബാനർജി. നെഞ്ചിലെ അണുബാധയെ തുടര്‍ന്ന് ഫെബ്രുവരി ആറിനാണ് ബാനര്‍ജിയെ ആശുപത്രിയില്‍ പ്രവേശിപ്പിച്ചത്.
1962 ല്‍ ഏഷ്യന്‍ ഗെയിംസ് സ്വര്‍ണമെഡല്‍ നേടിയ ഇന്ത്യന്‍ ഫുട്ബോള് ടീമില്‍ അംഗമായിരുന്നു ബാനര്‍ജി. 1958, 1962, 1966 എന്നിങ്ങനെ മൂന്നുതവണ ഏഷ്യന്‍ ഗെയിംസില്‍ ബാനര്‍ജി ഇന്ത്യയെ പ്രതിനിധീകരിച്ചു. 1960ലെ റോം ഒളിംപിക്‌സില്‍ ഇന്ത്യന്‍ ടീം നായകനായി. അന്ന് ഫ്രഞ്ച് ടീമിനെ സമനിലയില്‍ തളച്ച നിര്‍ണായക ഗോളുമായി ബാനര്‍ജി ആഗോള ശ്രദ്ധനേടി.
1956 ലെ മെല്‍ബണ്‍ ഒളിംപിക്‌സ് ക്വാര്‍ട്ടര്‍ ഫൈനലില്‍ ഓസ്‌ട്രേലിയയെ 4-2 ന് തകര്‍ത്ത ഇന്ത്യന്‍ ടീമിലും ബാനര്‍ജി അംഗമായിരുന്നു. ഇന്ത്യൻ ദേശീയ ടീമിനു വേണ്ടി 84 മൽസരങ്ങളിൽ ബൂട്ടണിഞ്ഞ ബാനർജി 65 തവണ പന്ത് വലയിലെത്തിച്ചു. ഇരുപതാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിലെ ഏറ്റവും മികച്ച ഇന്ത്യൻ താരമായി ഫിഫ അംഗീകാരവും ബാനർജിയെ തേടിയെത്തി.
